Overview

This is a completely free self-study course. All of the resources will be linked.

Warning: To complete this in 3 months is intense and will probably require dedicating time to study multiple times per day.

If this is too much, then just double the recommended times to take 6 months or multiple the times by 4 to take a full year. There is no rush.

The course comes in two parts: learning the cards and learning to do readings of the cards in context.

Learning the Tarot Cards

You will dedicate each day to studying 1 card, and the best way to do this is systematically in some order.

Start with the article on The Major Arcana for Day 1.

For the next 22 days, you’ll go through the Major Arcana cards. So on Day 2, you will carefully read the article on The Fool. That will be the card of focus for that day. Take notes in your tarot journal.

Come back to the meanings in different contexts and positions multiple times throughout the day. There will be more on this in the next section.

Then move on to the Minor Arcana. Take a day on this article and really get an understanding of the how these work. The Minor Arcana forms the bulk of the deck, and the meanings can be harder to remember if you don’t have a good understanding of the general ideas of the suits and numerology behind them.

Go through each of those cards one day at a time. Remember, the Minor Arcana article has a link to a very thorough description of each of the cards, the meanings, and sample readings. So you will start by reading those articles and taking notes for the first study session of the day.

The 78 cards plus two articles mentioned puts you at 80 days. This gives you 10 days of review or buffer to miss if you get sick or are overly busy or just want some days off.

Learning to Read the Cards in Context

Tarot isn’t just about memorizing card meanings, so once you’ve done the initial study of the card of the day, you will need to practice reading it in different contexts.

Weeks 1-2

You will be learning to read a basic 3-card spread. Read the article Beginner Tarot to learn how to use this spread.

As mentioned above, each day you will have a single card to focus on. You are going to simulate readings by pulling that focus card out of your deck and putting it to the side. Now you will draw 2 cards at random from the deck and the third card will be the focus card.

Do your practice reading this way to ensure you are practicing with the focus card in all positions of the spread upright and reversed. This focused study will get you very familiar with using this spread as well as permanently drilling the meanings of the focus card into your head.

For the cards you don’t know yet, you can use the free tool for tarot meanings to quickly reference a simplified meaning. You’ll keep getting practice and as the weeks go on you’ll keep reviewing them in this way.

Weeks 3-4

Now read the Intermediate Tarot spreads article.

You will keep going with your focus card of the day, but now you will do your sample readings with the Celtic Cross spread. This one can take quite a bit of time to learn, but it is also one of the most popular, so it is well worth your time.

Weeks 5-6

Keep going but practice with the 9-card box spread from the Intermediate article.

Weeks 7-11

Now you can look up other spreads that interest you and periodically return to the three you’ve practiced so far. The goal of these weeks is to start to develop your own style and taste for spreads. You can even develop your own if you’d like.

Keep learning your focus tarot card of the day and make sure you get several practice readings with that focus card. But other than that, you should be very far along in your comfort level of readings and using spreads to quickly understand context.

Week 12

It’s the final week. You should be pretty much done with the focus cards of the day and have a set of spreads you like to use at this point. This final week is all bonus.

Here are some supplementary articles to start considering and incorporating.

The Role of Intuition in Tarot Card Readings

The Significance of Numerology in Tarot

Also, go back to those earlier articles and see if you still agree with them. You should be developing your own point of view now and clarifying where you agree and disagree with my articles can be a great use of time in working on your unique tarot reading style.

Final Thoughts

Congratulations if you’ve made it through. This course is extremely time-consuming if done on this timescale. It will likely take 2 hours of dedication every single day for three months.

But when you’re done with it, you will have gone from knowing nothing about tarot to confidently reading at a decent level.
